Here's what a proper install actually looks like. The trench is excavated clean, landscape fabric is laid in and wrapped around the pipe, and clean stone is packed in around it. Every step serves a purpose. The fabric keeps fine soil from migrating into the gravel bed over time. The stone creates the void space water needs to move through. Skip either one, and you've already shortened the lifespan of the whole system.
